  1.                     MESSENGER QUICK SETUP INSTRUCTIONS

  3. To set up Messenger first run the program, INSTALL.EXE.  This program will
  4. create the necessary directories and copy or create all program or data
  5. files.  You may now run Messenger by switching to the Messenger directory
  6. and typing MSNG.  
  7.  
  8. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are upgrading Messenger to a newer version, make
  9. sure to use the UPGRADE option or your existing tagline category files will
  10. be overwritten.  Read page two and three of the Messenger manual before
  11. upgrading.
  12.  
  13. Some mail readers are able to run Messenger two different ways.  This
  14. document will only explain one method for each mail reader.  See the
  15. Messenger manual for instructions concerning other methods.
  16.  
  17. In order to have Messenger work with your mail reader, you must first tell
  18. your mail reader to use Messenger as its editor.  Messenger will call up
  19. your editor, add a tagline to the end of the message, then return to your
  20. mail reader.  Next you will need to turn off any tagline features in your
  21. mail reader.  Since a tagline is added directly to the message, no tagline
  22. is needed from the mail reader.  Finally, you may need to change a swapping
  23. option in your mail reader if you do not have enough memory to run
  24. Messenger.

  26. Only a few mail readers are listed below although Messenger should 
  27. work with most readers that use an external editor or calls up an 
  28. external tagline manager.

  30. BLUE WAVE V2.12

  33. From the Blue Wave main menu select "Setup Parameters".  On the top menu
  34. bar go to "Directories" window and select "Editor File Path" and press
  35. ENTER.  Type in the file path and Messenger program name, for example:
  36.   
  37.      C:\MSNG\MSNG.EXE
  38.  
  39. Also in the "Directories" window is the heading "Tagline File Name".  Write
  40. down the associated path and file name, for example C:\BWAVE\TAGLINES.BW,
  41. for later entry in the Messenger setup screen.  When you adopt taglines
  42. from Blue Wave, they are stored in this file.  This is the file Messenger
  43. uses when importing taglines.

  45. Next, go back to the top menu bar and choose "Miscellaneous".  Select
  46. "Tagline Configuration" and press enter.  Then select "Tagline Selection
  47. Type" and press the space bar until "No Sigs" appears.  Press ESC to exit
  48. back into the "Miscellaneous" window.  Now select "Memory Swapping Option"
  49. and change the option "Swap on Shell to Msg Editor" to YES by using your
  50. space bar.  This last step maybe omitted if you do not require memory
  51. swapping.

  53. Finally, use your ESC key to go back to the top menu bar and choose "Quit"
  54. and save your new parameters.

  56. After you save your configuration and exit Blue Wave, run Messenger and
  57. select CONFIG from the main menu bar.  In the Directories area next to the
  58. label, "Tagline Import File" enter the path and file name (default name is
  59. TAGLINES.BW) you had written down from the Blue Wave parameter, "Tagline
  60. File Name".  Now change the mail reader return file name to Blue Wave's
  61. path and the file name, JH0.REP as shown below.  (This file name is
  62. required only if you are using the second method.)

  77. From the Silver Xpress main menu bar choose "Configuration".  Then select
  78. the heading "Editor Information".  Change the setting next to "External
  79. Editor Program Filename" to:

  81.      $C:\MSNG\MSNG.EXE

  83. The $ in front of the path and file name may be omitted if you do not need
  84. Silver Xpress to perform memory swapping.
  85.  
  86. Next, change the setting "Use Small Msg Editor As Default" to NO by
  87. pressing your space bar.   Press F10 or select OK to return to the
  88. "Configuration" window. 
  89.  
  90. Next, from the "Configuration" window choose the "Signature and Taglines"
  91. option.  Select the setting, "Tag line or @File Name" and leave blank by
  92. deleting all text.  Also delete all text under the setting, "Tag line
  93. Manager".   These setting are left blank when Messenger is called up
  94. through the editor option.  Messenger can also be called up through the
  95. "Tag line Manager" option, but some features will be lost.   See the
  96. Messenger documentation for complete details.

  98. Remember to save your configuration by selecting "Write Config to Disk"
  99. before exiting the Silver Xpress configuration menu.

  102. OFFLINE XPRESS V2.1
  103. ===================

  105. At Offline Xpress' main menu press Alt-N to enter the configuration screen. 
  106. Select "Editor" and change the "Editor command line" to read the Messenger
  107. path and file name, for example:
  108.  
  109.      C:\MSNG\MSNG.EXE
  110.  
  111. Next, from the configuration screen select "Replies" and change the
  112. setting, "Enable Taglines" to OFF. 
  113.  
  114. Also from the configuration screen you may need to go to "General" settings
  115. and enable swapping if your system does not have enough memory for both OLX
  116. and Messenger.

  119. SPEED V1.40

  122. Press Alt-C anywhere in Speed to bring up the configuration menu.  Now
  123. select General Setup and change the editor command line to Messenger's path
  124. and file name followed by %s as shown below.

  131. Leave the "Tagline Mgr" and "Tag Ret. File" settings blank.  Make sure you
  132. remember to save your settings by pressing TAB. 
  133. Now load Messenger and select Config from the main menu bar. Make sure the
  134. option Use Editor is checked. Enter the path and file name of the editor
  135. you plan to use in the adjacent box.  Messenger uses the DOS editor
  136. EDIT.COM by default.
